Aiayu means "soul" in Aymara, the language of the indigenous Aymara people of the Andes. Danish knitwear designer Maria Hogh Heilmann founded AIAYU in 2004 to celebrate and support the work of Bolivian artisans. She and her team have created scores of jobs in Bolivia, employing a large team of artisans to create Aiayu's sophisticated, streamlined knitwear—uniquely produced with the patented "cashllama" fiber, renowned for its thermal and durable qualities.
